I hope this is a familiar scene to all those
from the midwest. This was a summer painting, after
the first or so cutting of the hay field close to
where I used to live in Iowa.

"Dinghy"

Oil on canvas board
6 x 8"

This is the second small painting I've done using a palette knife. As in the first, "Reflections," the focus is on texture. Layering on the oil paint in thin slabs was an interesting process that really brought out the shadow cast by this small boat.

"Reflections"

Oil on canvas board
6 x 8"
This is a painting done with a palette knife instead of a brush, resulting in a very thick application of paint. I love the texture this adds to "Reflections," especially in the waves surrounding the boats.

"August Bales"

Oil on canvas board
12 x 24"
Hay bales are great subjects, and I have done many paintings of them. This Iowa field was painted on a very hot and humid August day.

"Old Yellow Skiff"

Watercolor

A fishing boat in Puerto Rico. I painted the dock just as it was, in bad shape and on the verge of falling into the sea.

One of the many paintings of my yellow lab. I call him my painting partner for a reason: he's always right beside me while I'm working.

"Sack Lunch #2"

Tomatoes in a brown paper sack from the farmers' market.

Detail of "Sack Lunch #2"

This is a close-up photo of "Sack Lunch #2" that was taken while the painting dried in the sun.

"After the Storm Passes"

Watercolor
21 x 28" matted
Even though the sky still looks threatening, it's so peaceful after summer thunderstorms have just passed over. I enjoy painting the shadows and colors of these powerful storms (from a safe distance, of course).

"Fishermen"

More beached wooden boats on the coast of Puerto Rico.
